The Story of Andromeda

Campfire Audio's Iconic Green In-Ear Monitor

When people think of Campfire Audio, they often picture a small, faceted, bright-green earphone. That’s Andromeda, the in-ear monitor that took us from making simple one- and two-driver IEMs to building a true modern classic with five balanced armatures and a sound that captured the attention of listeners all over the world.

From its debut in 2016 to today’s Andromeda Emerald Sea and Andromeda 10, this family of IEMs has become a reference point for how we think about tuning, design, and long-term evolution. This page is a home for that story.

Andromeda at a Glance

  • First appearance: 2016, as Campfire Audio’s first five-driver flagship.
  • Core concept: Compact, all-BA design with natural, realistic tuning and an expansive soundstage.
  • Signature look: Faceted metal shell in vivid green, inspired by the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Current generation: Andromeda Emerald Sea and the ten-driver Andromeda 10.

The Story of Andromeda

Before Campfire Audio existed, our team in Portland was already obsessed with signal chains, building premium cables and amplifiers under the ALO Audio name. Our first in-ears were deliberately simple: single- and dual-driver models that taught us how to package our ideas about tone and build into something tiny and durable.

Andromeda was the leap forward. In 2016 we combined five balanced armature drivers (two for low frequencies, one for the mids, and two for the highs) with carefully tuned acoustic chambers to create an earphone that sounded spacious, balanced, and alive.

Reviewers quickly described Andromeda as a “staple of the IEM world” and a defining design for both Campfire and the wider community. Its soundstage, natural midrange, and easygoing but detailed treble made it a go-to recommendation for listeners who wanted an IEM that could handle almost any genre.

The look was just as distinctive as the sound: a compact, angular aluminum shell, anodized in a deep, jewel-like green that would become synonymous with the Andromeda name.

A Decade of Andromeda

Think of Andromeda not as a single product, but an evolving line built on a single idea: a compact, green in-ear monitor that balances musicality and technical performance. Over the years, that idea has evolved through many iterations and special editions:

2016: Original Andromeda

The first production model: 5-BA design, classic green shell, acoustic expansion chamber for the highs. It quickly gained a reputation for its expansive stage and natural tonality.

2017-2018: Early Special Editions & Refinements

Limited colorways like Snow White, Iceberg, and Pacific Blue introduced rare finishes while keeping the original internal design and tuning. At the same time, the core Andromeda received improvements in machining, nozzle geometry, and MMCX connectors to make it more robust and comfortable.

Andromeda S & Andromeda SE Collaborations

Andromeda S replaced the green aluminum with a mirror-polished stainless steel shell and updated drivers, giving a slightly different tonal balance. Other collaborations, like the Mixwave MW10 edition in Japan, used unique materials and inlays to explore how far the design could be pushed while remaining recognizably Andromeda.

Andromeda Gold & Seven-Driver Experiments

Andromeda Gold introduced a seven-BA configuration and the most radical sonic shift of the series so far, becoming a cult favorite among long-time fans.

2020: Andromeda 2020

The “ultimate revamp” of the original: a revised shell with new grille and spout, plus a solid-body internal driver housing that improved consistency and control over the acoustic paths while preserving the core Andromeda signature.

Multiverse: King & Gold Titanium

Ultra-limited experiments in brass and titanium shells, produced in tiny numbers for a community event, pushed materials and tuning into boutique territory.

2023: Andromeda Emerald Sea

A ground-up redesign using new dual-diaphragm balanced armatures in a completely re-engineered shell with softer ergonomics. Emerald Sea takes the warmth and emotion Andromeda is known for and refines it with smoother treble and improved comfort.

2025: Andromeda 10

To celebrate ten years of IEMs, Campfire introduced Andromeda 10, with ten balanced armatures and two special stainless-steel editions featuring Damascus lids. It is described as both a continuation and an expansion of the original Andromeda sound, combining a decade of engineering lessons into a new flagship.

What Does Andromeda Sound Like?

Different generations and special editions have their own flavor, but Andromeda has always gravitated around a recognizable sound:

Aspect How It Sounds What It Means for You
Soundstage Expansive, holographic, “out of the head” presentation Music feels wide and layered, closer to speakers than typical IEMs
Imaging & Detail Precise placement of instruments with good separation and fine microdetail Easy to follow individual parts in complex mixes
Midrange Natural, expressive mids with slightly forward vocals Voices and instruments sound lifelike and emotionally engaging
Bass Controlled, textured low end with tasteful presence, not overwhelming Enough weight for modern music without being 'bass-forward'
Treble Detailed, airy highs with a refined edge (smoother on Emerald Sea) Cymbals and ambiance sound clear and open without harshness or glare
Overall Tuning Balanced, slightly warm balancing between musical and analytical Works across many genres; a strong choice as an all-around daily-driver IEM

A Modern Classic In the IEM World

Over nearly a decade, Andromeda has been called a “benchmark IEM,” a “staple of the hobby,” and one of the designs that helped shape modern multi-BA earphones.

It has earned that status not just by sounding good, but by evolving carefully, keeping what listeners loved about the original while trying new materials, internal architectures, and driver layouts. For many people, their first listen to an Andromeda is also their first step into high-end in-ear monitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Emerald Sea uses an all-new set of dual-diaphragm balanced armatures and a re-engineered shell with softer ergonomics. It keeps the spacious, emotional Andromeda tonality but offers smoother treble, improved fit, and updated accessories.

Andromeda 10 is a ten-driver anniversary model that builds on the Andromeda sound with more drivers, upgraded internals, and special metal shells. It is designed as a “love letter” to the original, with more resolution and technical performance while staying recognizably Andromeda.

No. All Andromeda variants are relatively easy to drive from portable sources thanks to their low impedance and high sensitivity, although they will also reveal the character (and noise floor) of your DAC or DAP.

New units of older versions are generally no longer in production, but they may appear occasionally through pre-owned and B-stock listings on the Campfire Audio Market, as well as through the broader used market.
